How to Declare

The BA and BS in Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health are minimum-requirement majors. This means that students can declare either major at any time after meeting the requirements below: 

BA Requirements

  • Minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA 
  • NUTR 200 Nutrition for Today or equivalent 
  • English Composition, 5 credits 
  • 45 college credits 

BS Requirements

  • Minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA 
  • NUTR 200 Nutrition for Today or equivalent 
  • English Composition, 5 credits 
  • One science course from the following: BIOL 118, BIOL 161, BIOL 180, CHEM 120, CHEM 142,  CHEM 145 

In-Progress Requirements

First-year and sophomore students must complete course requirements before declaring the major. Juniors, seniors, and other students who need to declare a major right away may apply with course requirements in progress. If you have questions about your application timeline, please contact advising to discuss your situation.  

Application Deadlines

We review and process applications as they are submitted. You should hear back from us with more information within two weeks of applying. Students are always declared into a major for the following quarter in which they are registered, and the application deadline for entry in the following quarter is the Friday of finals week. 

Transfer Student Information

Transfer students can declare the BA or BS in Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health after they are admitted to the UW. We are happy to meet with transfer students to plan their transition to the UW and into the major – you can schedule an appointment with us online.  

Steps to Declare

  1. Learn more about our majors by attending an information session (either live or pre-recorded), and reading through this website. Contact advising for any follow-up questions or additional planning. 
  2. Complete the online application. To apply, you will need to prepare the following information: 
    • Know whether you want to apply to the BA or the BS. If you are still undecided, you can read more about choosing between our majors or contact advising to discuss your options. 
    • If you are planning on pursuing a double major or a double degree, or if you have completed over 120 credits, you will be asked to provide a graduation plan. If you want help creating your graduation plan, schedule a time to meet with our advisers. 
  3. We will review your application to confirm that the minimum requirements are met and that your degree can be completed within the University’s satisfactory progress policies. 
  4. You will be notified about admission to the major within 2 weeks of submission.
