Faculty and students present at Nutrition Live Online 2020

Four members from the Nutritional Sciences Program will present this week at a free online event this week called Nutrition Live Online 2020, an event sponsored by the American Society for Nutrition (ASN).

Adam Drewnowski, director for Nutritional Sciences and the Center for Public Health Nutrition will participate in a panel on sustainable food systems, and three graduate students will present abstracts.

The event takes place over four days from June 1 – 4.

Adam Drewowski joins panel discussion June 4 on Sustainable Food Systems

Drewnwoski is a featured panelist speaking June 4 from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. discussing, “Healthy Diets from Sustainable Food Systems. What Does It Mean & How Do We Accomplish It?”

This cross-sector session will provide an overview of sustainable diets with emphasis on the healthfulness of our food supply, an overview of the government’s role in sustainable food systems, including what the USDA is doing in this space. The session will also include a robust Q&A with the opportunity for the audience to engage on this complex topic. 

Student Research Abstracts 

Three graduate students from the UW Nutritional Sciences Program and Graduate Coordinated Program in Dietetics will also present abstracts. 

Kelsey Schmidt, a doctoral candidate in Nutrition Science and dietetic intern in the Graduate Coordinated Program in Dietetics presents the abstract, “Impact of Low-Fat and Full-Fat Dairy Intake on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors: A Randomized Controlled Trial,” in the Dietary Patterns category.

Emahlea Jackson, an MPH student and dietetic intern in the Graduate Coordinated Program in Dietetics presents the abstract, “Association Between Household Food Security and Disordered Eating Behaviors Among Young Adults with Diabetes: The SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study,” as a finalist in the Nutrition Epidemiology category.

Ivory Loh, an MPH student and dietetic intern in the Graduate Coordinated Program in Dietetics presents the abstract, “Food Insecurity Is Associated with Depression Among a Vulnerable Workforce: Early Care and Education Workers,” in the Community and Public Health Nutrition category.

Schmidt and Jackson’s submissions were also named as finalists for the Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science program which the ASN selects to recognize the highest quality research presented by students and young investigators at the event.

“Through this activity, the American Society for Nutrition celebrates the achievements of our rising stars,” stated Richard Mattes, PhD, MPH, RD, President, American Society for Nutrition.

The NUTRITION 2020 LIVE ONLINE event was originally scheduled to begin May 30 in Seattle, but was cancelled due to the impacts of COVID-19.

With support from the ASN Foundation and leading partners, plans are underway to deliver the same great content and collaboration in an online format at no charge.
