MS Course Requirements in Nutritional Sciences

The following requirements reflect the curriculum for students who enrolled in the MS program in Autumn 2017 for reference and advising purposes.

Students enrolled in both the  MS and the Graduate Coordinated Program in Dietetics (GCPD) should note the additional GCPD requirements.

GCPD Students: Supervised Practice/Practice Experience: The timing of this 3 week rotation varies depending on the sites. It generally occurs in late August or early September.
2nd Autumn Credits: 2-13
NUTR 526 Maternal and Pediatric Nutrition 4 Required GCPD; Elective for non-GCPD
NUTR 559 Orientation to Clinical Dietetics Practice 3 GCPD only
NUTR 563 Nutrition in Acute Care 4 GCPD only
NUTR 596 or NUTR 700 Nutrition Practice Capstone or Master’s Thesis 2 All MS
MS students who are not in the GCPD should consider taking courses to satisfy elective credits this quarter.
2nd Winter/Spring/Summer – GCPD Only Credits: 30
NUTR 561 Supervised Practice/Practice Experience 10 per quarter[b] GCPD only
MS Students are required to complete the following credits not tied to a specific quarter:
NUTR 596 or NUTR 700 Nutrition Practice Capstone or Master’s Thesis 6 additional credits (for min of 9)[a] All MS
HSERV 590/579 Structural Racism and Public Health 1 All MS
Additional Electives 5 All MS


[a] Timing of NUTR 596 Capstone/700 Thesis Credits: With the exception of the required 1 credit (1st year spring quarter) and 2 credits (2nd year autumn quarter), students may distribute the remaining NUTR 596 or NUTR 700 credits as best fits their schedule.

Additional GCPD Curriculum Notes:

[b] NUTR 561: For the 30 credits of GCPD Practice experience, students register through PCE (Professional and Continuing Education) which does not have tuition distinction for tiers or residency.
[c] Electives: GCPD courses satisfy the 4 elective credits required for the MS degree.
[d] Students with DPD Verification Statement: GCPD students holding a DPD verification statement waive out of Food Safety (NUTR 545).
